Individuals have a number of different ways to apply for a police check. They can either go to their local police station to apply, or alternatively they can apply through a commercial background checking service provider, who has access to a ACIC- accredited “broker”. This is generally the quickest and simplest method, as Police Checks can be processed online and returned within 24 to 48 hours in most cases.
Alternatively, individuals are able to apply for a national criminal history check in the state or territory in which they normally reside. In some states and territories they are required to present in person to a police station to request their police check, as this ensures individuals have been correctly identified. Checks are generally processed in around 10 working days, but this can vary from state to state.
In some circumstances, Individuals may be required to apply for their police check through The Australian Federal Police, If they fall under any of the below criteria:
- They are seeking employment with the Commonwealth Government
